CIDA support its programs in Nepal through community based development approaches thereby working with civil society groups in remote communities. The program builds the social capital required to ensure Nepal's rural poor have the capacity to plan and advocate for their own development. Through policy feedback mechanisms, CIDA's program helps institutions to better plan and implements policies as well as provided policy inputs to government at diffrent levels.


SAHAKARYA: "Working Together to Build Self-Reliant Communities in the Hills of Nepal" - Project 2003-2008

SAHAKARYA aims to improve socio-economic condition of selected communities by promoting equitable representatives Community Based Organizations (CBOs) capable of managing local resources and interacting with locally elected bodies and government agencies.

The goal of the project is to contribute to the reduction of poverty in the hilly regions of Nepal by strengthening community based organizations (CBOs) through economic and social development.

The project is being implemented in the Mid and Far Western Districts: Jumla, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Surkhet, and Dailekh.

The Canadian Executing Agency is Canadian Centre for Studies and International Cooperation (CECI) Social Welfare Council (SWC) is the Government counterpart.

Peace Building from Below - RRN : 2008- 2012

The Peace Building from Below (PBB) is a three year project implemented by the Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN), a national non-government and non-profit making organization. It is being implemented in 20 VDCs of Bhojpur and Sankhuwasabha districts of Eastern Development Region of Nepal. These two districts were highly affected by the Maoist conflict in the past and the possibility of potential new conflicts is also equally high in the districts. The overall goal of PBB is to contribute to sustainable peace building. The purpose are (a) to develop and promote circumstance based model(s) for community-based reconciliation that can be replicated nation-wide and (b) to strengthen and mobilize Community Based Peoples Organizations (CBPOs) for peace building and conflict transformation. While the project has been designed for enhancing Nepal’s peace building process at the local level, it will also assists the Government of Nepal to fulfil its commitment to bring tangible changes in the local governance and community development processes. The project contains four broad components: capacity strengthening of CBPOs, livelihoods improvements, reconciliation and reintegration, development of circumstance based reconciliation model(s), and project management. The total budget is CAD 3.05 million.

Local Governance and Community Develpoment Process(LGCDP):

LGCDP The Government of Nepal (GON) is committed to bringing about tangible changes in the local governance and community development process. The aim is to improve the living standards of the people through community led development, efficient service delivery, good governance, based on a democratic value system and rights-based approach and inclusive development efforts subsequent to the restructuring of the state. This will be based on the conceptual framework of federal, inclusive and participatory development, with the implementation of local level development initiatives under the leadership of local autonomous government. The focus of the local development programme will be to support poverty alleviation measures based on the fundamental premises of inclusive development, and through the mobilisation of local resources and use of local skills and technology opportunities - all with the direct involvement of local citizens and community organisations.
